Feeding Children One Backpack at a Time
Food Collection: 1st Sunday of the Month
There are children in Mount Prospect who are eligible for a free or reduced-priced lunch. There are a number of working families who can’t make ends meet. Although the children in these families may qualify for the free or reduced lunches at school during the week, weekends or holidays their food source is less certain. Hungry children have lower test scores, diminished learning capacity, increased behavior problems and increased tardiness and absences
Can a plain back pack show hungry children God’s love and care?
- Yes! – when that back pack is filled with kid friendly food.
- Yes!-when each backpack is reliably waiting to take home each Friday.
- Yes!-when parishioners of all ages come together to help children in need.
The Backpack Ministry was started by one woman looking for a way to help under-fed school children. The commitment is simple: each Friday, she sent home food with kids who rely on free or reduced school day meals in a plain, pride saving back pack. Inspired by her work, churches throughout the country have begun their own Backpack Ministries. Now, it’s our turn!
We have: storage and packing space, back packs donated from St. Mark’s own Backpack Ministry and food ready for the first couple weeks of January.
We need: prayers for these children and our new ministry. People to deliver the food to the schools, and of course, the food itself.
Let our cheerful service be a sign of God’s love!
